The purpose of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists is to assist members
with their family history and genealogical research by: actively providing opportunities
for the development of genealogical skills and studies; representing the interests
of the members in the wider community; and promoting the preservation of information.

The National Library of New Zealand hosts a site with access to an online catalog and an overview of the country's government. The site also includes an online database describing over 5,000 images in the collection of the Alexander Turnbull Library's "Timeframes" collection.
The place to get birth, marriage and death certificates for New Zeland is the Registration Office.
The National Archives of New Zealand is the repository of the nation's historic documents.

The names of numerous emigrants from Scotland booking passage to Port Chalmers can be found on the website for the Ngaio Press book Going Abroad: Early Scottish Emigrants to Otago and Southland, New Zealand. The passengers on several ships landing at Port Chalmers between 1848 and 1851 are detailed.
Australia and New Zealand Passenger Lists is a cooperative effort between a number of people who have transcripts of ships carrying emigrants to these two nations. The site includes the names of ships, the dates they sailed, the ports they landed at, and the names and email addresses of the people who have copies of the passenger lists for each vessel.
