The Norwegian Historical Data Centre at the University of Tromso has as its main aim to computerize the Norwegian censuses 1865 onwards together with the parish registers and other sources from the 18th and 19th centuries. The ultimate goal is a national population register for the 18th and 19th centuries, primarily for research purposes, but also for the benefit of schools, genealogists, local historians, etc. Products include printed editions with alphabetical indexes, digital versions on diskettes and statistical tabulations via the Internet.

The Norwegian State Archives System (Arkivverket) consists of the National Archives (Riksarkivet), covering the central administrative institutions, and eight regional state archives (statsarkiv), covering the local branches of the state administration. In the National Archives there are archives back to the Middle Ages and from the union with Denmark up to 1814. The newer archives come from ministries and other central administrative offices, as well as the Supreme High Court. In the regional state archives there are archives from vicars, judges etc. Such documents may be church books, probate records and mortgage registers.
