Civil War, 1861-1865: Featuring Civil War documents (including the Confederate
Constitution), exhibits, archives, discussion groups, and more.
U.S. Civil War Center: Located at Louisiana State University, with over 200 links to documents and files, including letters, diaries, and even some muster rolls. U.S. Colored Troops: The first fruits of the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, an online database of 230,000-plus African American soldiers. This database can be searched by surname and given name, returning a brief line about the soldier's service. This links to greater information about the individual's service, and to information about the unit(s) he served in. Texas Confederate Pension Records: With the name of each claimant, the pension number, and information on ordering a full copy of the file from the state. General Officers of the Civil War: Features about 250 reasonably-sized images of the military men who led the North and South during America's darkest years. Civil War Maps: Reconnaissance, sketch, coastal, and theater-of-war maps which depict troop activities and fortifications during the Civil War. Part of this selection contains maps by Major Jedediah Hotchkiss, a topographical engineer in the Confederate Army. Hotchkiss made detailed battle maps that were used by Generals Lee and Jackson. This selection also includes maps that depict General Sherman's military campaigns in Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Part of the Library of Congress American Memory project. Selected Civil War Photographs: 1,118 photographs. Most of the images were made under the supervision of Mathew B. Brady, and include scenes of military personnel, preparations for battle, and battle after-effects. Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War: The successor to the Grand Army of the Republic and the Sons of Veterans, with links to such allied groups as the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War. The Grand Army of the Republic: Originally formed for veterans of the Union cause in the American Civil War. Provides a good introduction to the organization, and tells how it impacted the lives of its members. Sons of Confederate Veterans: The national homepage for this heritage society, with excellent historical and genealogical information. Letters from an Iowa Soldier: These letters by Newton Scott provide a unique perspective into this era of U.S. history. African American Civil War Memorial: In Washington, DC African Americans in the Civil War: Links to websites with information on their contributions. Black Confederates in the Civil War: An article on the subject by Patrick R. Massengill. Guide To Tracing Your African American Civil War Ancestor: A good tutorial by Jeanette Braxton-Secret.
