Steps to Research Researchers of all
levels start by first gathering their tools. Beginners will be purchasing tools for the first time while experienced & advanced researchers will most likely need to restock their general supplies and look for supplies specific to their new project. You should have plenty of blank archival quality forms, a filing system, as well as the basics: pencils, permanent pens, scissors, paper clips, sticky notes, correction pens, markers, highlighters, a stapler, letter opener and tape. Then pull together the information you have to start with. This may be the pile of incomplete family pedigree your father gave you in a large manilla envelope. Or this may be the information you just know about your family. Using the applicable chart or form, write down what you know. Fill in the blanks with things you remember, ask other family members what they remember and look for documents or writing that may give you additional information. When you write down what you know, ALWAYS write down where you got it from. Write down what document you found the information on or if it's something your father, aunt or cousin told you. See the Everton's Family Work Sheet for information on documenting. As you gather the information, keep organized so you can easily refer back to the documents.
